WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL HEMP USED FOR?
Considering how long mankind has been in contact with this plant, we are glad that it is still used so much today. I’m sure many of you know that it has been used to make clothes and paper for years, but did you know that it can be used for beauty products? insulation? and what about CBD filters, fuels and oils?
CDB PRODUCTS
One of the uses of hemp with which people have become familiar recently is the production of cannabidiol. And it’s true, CBD consumers have a lot to thank hemp for. Unlike the plants we are more used to, hemp plants have a negligible THC content and are rich in CBD.
Since many CBD users are not interested in any of the psychoactive effects associated with THC, hemp has become the preferred crop for farmers who manufacture CBD products. From there, it is treated similarly to regular to create butter, foodstuffs or oils, among other things.
If you are looking for professionally made CBD products, we advise you to research and locate a reputable supplier. Producing high quality CBD requires a thorough process, but the industry lacks regulation, which means we have access to lower quality or even contaminated oils. Look for a producer who is responsible, who uses extraction with CO₂, filtration, and whose oils are verified by third party testing.
CLOTHING/FIBER
Hemp was one of the first plants used to make fibre, and some samples of Chinese hemp fibre date back to 8000 BC. Today, hemp is still used to make clothing, and it is experiencing a resurgence lately.
Although hemp clothing is often associated with “hippie fashion” (such as hemp vests and baggy trousers), some new designers are using this fabric to create modern items that challenge this stigma.
PAPER
Hemp fibre can be used to make paper in much the same way as wood fibre. In fact, until the middle of the 19th century, hemp was the main material used to produce paper all over the world, when wood started to take over little by little.
In fact, hemp is more suitable for paper production than wood, as it contains much more cellulose. Cellulose is what gives plants their structure, and the more cellulose a plant contains, the more suitable it is for paper production, since fewer chemicals are needed to extract it.
FOOD
Hemp seeds have received much praise for their high nutritional value and for containing high levels of protein, calcium, iron and essential fatty acids, among other things. For this reason, they have become very popular as a type of superfood and are often sold as a dietary supplement.
However, hemp can also be used to make oil and milk, and is often used as an additive in alcoholic drinks such as beer and wine. In addition, hemp seeds can be used as a nutritious alternative to animal feed.
PLASTIC
Hemp can be used to make a wide variety of plastics. In fact, in the 1940s, Ford produced a prototype car made from hemp and soya plastic. Unfortunately, this vehicle was never commercialized, but there is a very famous photograph of Henry Ford with an axe showing its durability.
Today, a mixture of fiberglass, hemp fiber, kenaf and flax is used to make composite panels for cars. Hemp plastics are also used to make shower curtains, CD and DVD cases, and much more.
FUEL
As mentioned above, hemp can be used to make oil. And like other vegetable oils, it can be processed to produce biodiesel. The plant can also be fermented to create ethanol or methanol. However, the production of hemp fuels is very small, because commercial biodiesel and biogas are usually made from cheap materials.
FILTERS
Hemp can be used mixed with other fibres to make all kinds of filters, such as tea bags, coffee filters or oil filters, among others. Hemp fibre is very resistant, especially in humid conditions, making it an ideal material for the production of any type of filter for liquids.
In fact, tea bags are usually made of a combination of wood and hemp fibre as well as plastic polymers. There are also filters and bags made from pure hemp, which are very easy to wash and can be reused.
